Their story
Chuck Casano first got hooked on dragon fruit while working for a nonprofit in Nicaragua. He noticed that many local farmers could not afford pesticides, so their fruit was organic in all but name, and he saw a chance to open the U.S. market to them.
He started Pitaya Foods with co-founder Ben Hiddlestone, selling frozen dragon fruit to juice bars out of a garage in La Jolla. The company is now based in San Diego, is a certified B Corporation, and has grown to include jackfruit, acai and other frozen fruits.
How it's made
Pitaya Foods began with 10 small family farms in Nicaragua and has helped hundreds of them earn organic certification. The fruit is harvested ripe and frozen into packs, smoothie bowls and sorbets, and the company now sources from family farms in several countries.
Why we carry them
We keep Pitaya in mind for the brightest smoothie bowls around. It is good to know the fruit also supports small organic farms.
