Their story
Samantha Sheehan started POE in 2009 with a focus on wines from single vineyards, made with as little intervention as possible. The name comes from the ravens that lived in her backyard when she was growing up. She shares a tasting room called Outland in downtown Napa with fellow small producers Farella and Forlorn Hope.
A trip to Champagne with her brother, where a young grower walked them through his cellar, left her wanting to make sparkling wine, and she began in 2013. POE's lineup now runs from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay to rosé, traditional-method sparkling and a Pinot Noir nouveau released each November.
How it's made
Grapes come from cool sites around the North Coast, including Van der Kamp on Sonoma Mountain, Hudson in Carneros and Manchester Ridge in Mendocino. Samantha uses native yeasts, careful sulfur levels and no additives, and some Pinot Noirs are fermented partly whole cluster and bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Why we carry them
We like POE for California wines that feel fresh and restrained. The sparkling wine is a great local alternative to Champagne.
