Single-vineyard Italian wines named for angels and demons.

Their story

Poggio Anima is a partnership between Riccardo Campinoti, the winemaker behind Le Ragnaie in Montalcino, and his American importer Ronnie Sanders of Vine Street Imports. The two set out to make affordable everyday wines from growers they already knew and trusted around Italy.

Each wine comes from one grape and one vineyard, from Grillo in western Sicily to Sangiovese in Tuscany and Primitivo in Puglia. The labels play on balance and opposites: the whites carry the names of archangels and the reds are named for fallen angels, each chosen to suit the grape or place.

How it's made

Rather than buying bulk or leftover wine, the team picks specific sites for their altitude, soil and exposure to the sea. Riccardo believes the wine is made in the vineyard, so cellar work stays simple, with most wines raised in stainless steel and a few given a short rest in used oak.

Why we carry them

We like Poggio Anima for well-made Italian wines that are easy on the wallet. The angel and demon labels also make them fun to bring to dinner.
