Their story
Porfidio started with Martin Grassl, a young Austrian whose family had made brandy in the Alps for generations. In 1991 he brought that distilling background to the Mexican coast and set up shop in Puerto Vallarta, building a tequila label that never quite followed the usual rules.
More recently the brand has pushed further, with a project called Tour du Monde that grows blue agave in South Africa, distills it in Switzerland and ages it in new oak.
Production of agave spirit, along with a rum, continues at the Puerto Vallarta facility.
How it's made
Porfidio works with 100% blue agave. Its Tour du Monde spirit is triple distilled, and aged expressions such as the Anejo Extra rest in virgin oak barrels, with some released as single barrel bottlings.
Why we carry them
We like Porfidio for its outsider point of view, a brandy maker's approach to agave. It makes a good conversation starter for the tequila fan who thinks they have tried everything.
