Their story
The Coutier family has worked the land in Ambonnay, a Grand Cru village in the Montagne de Reims, since 1619. René Coutier leads the estate, which tends about 9 hectares of its own vines.
Ambonnay is known for Pinot Noir, but René's father broke with local habit in 1946, becoming the first grower in the village to plant Chardonnay. That choice paid off: Coutier's Chardonnay is now held in nearly the same regard as the village's Pinot.
The house is small, making around 25,000 bottles a year.
How it's made
The estate farms its own vineyards, planted roughly two-thirds Pinot Noir and one-third Chardonnay. All fruit comes from Ambonnay, so each bottle is Grand Cru, from the Brut Tradition to a Blanc de Blancs.
Why we carry them
We love grower Champagne that tastes of one village, and Coutier is a great example at a fair price. Try the Blanc de Blancs for a rare look at Ambonnay Chardonnay.
