Their story
Carter Raff, a San Francisco native with a long fascination for spirits and their label design, founded Raff Distillerie in 2011. He set up production in a former maximum-security prison building in the city.
His bottles borrow from local lore. Bummer & Lazarus gin is named for two famous stray dogs of 1860s San Francisco, and Emperor Norton Absinthe honors the city's self-declared emperor.
How it's made
The gin starts as grape brandy, then is redistilled with coriander, bitter orange peel and licorice root. The absinthe follows the traditional French method, with a grape brandy base and wormwood from near Pontarlier, France.
Why we carry them
We love a local distiller who puts San Francisco's quirky past in the bottle. The grape-based gin is softer than most and great in a martini.
