Their story
David Ramey founded his Healdsburg winery in 1996 after a long career that began at Château Pétrus in Bordeaux and ran through Dominus, Chalk Hill, Matanzas Creek and Rudd. His work with Chardonnay earned him the nickname "Professor Chardonnay."
Ramey is a family business. Since 2021, David's children Claire and Alan Ramey have served as co-presidents: Claire oversees the vineyards, including the estate Westside Farms, and Alan runs winery operations after stints making wine in Chile and Burgundy.
How it's made
Ramey sources from top Sonoma and Napa sites such as Hyde, Ritchie and Rochioli, plus its own Westside Farms. The team uses Old World methods including whole-cluster pressing, native yeast fermentation and aging on the lees.
Why we carry them
We think Ramey is a benchmark for balanced California Chardonnay that rewards a few years in the cellar. The Sonoma Coast bottling is a great place to start.
