Real Minero
Clay-pot mezcal from a fourth-generation family in Santa Catarina Minas.
- Founded by
- Ángeles family
- Based in
- Santa Catarina Minas, Oaxaca
Their story
Real Minero is made by the Ángeles family, fourth-generation mezcaleros in Santa Catarina Minas, about half an hour outside Oaxaca City. Lorenzo Ángeles Mendoza and his son Eduardo run the distillery, Doña Florentina oversees bottling, and daughter Graciela Ángeles Carreño leads marketing.
The family works in tiny volumes, around 300 liters a month, and special batches can be just 100 or 200 liters.
How it's made
Wild and cultivated agaves are roasted in an earthen pit over oak and mesquite, shredded by hand and fermented with wild yeasts in oak vats. The mezcal is double distilled in small 80-liter clay pot stills, and all production is certified organic.
Why we carry them
We think Real Minero is one of the best ways to taste traditional clay-pot mezcal. These are small batches worth savoring slowly.
