Their story

Ron Cihuatán comes from Licorera Cihuatán in the Cihuatán Valley of El Salvador, a country with little rum tradition of its own. Co-founder Juan Alfredo Pacas and master blender Gabriela Ayala lead a team that makes everything in the country, from cane field to bottle.

The company laid down its first barrels in 2004 and waited more than a decade before releasing its first rum, an eight-year-old, in 2015. The brand draws on Mayan history in both its names and its design.

How it's made

The distillery grows its own sugarcane and ferments molasses into two styles of rum: a light spirit and a heavier, more aromatic one. These are aged in American white oak and French oak, and for some bottlings in barrels made of ceiba, a tree sacred to the Maya. The valley's tropical heat speeds up the aging.

As the only rum distillery in the world using ceiba barrels, we are able to create something truly extraordinary.

Why we carry them

We like introducing people to rum from El Salvador, and Cihuatán is a fine place to start. Look for the ceiba-aged bottlings if you want something unusual.
