Their story

Ron del Barrilito is made at Hacienda Santa Ana in Bayamón, just outside San Juan, an estate the Fernández family has held since 1787. Pedro Fernández came home in 1871 from engineering studies in France, where he had learned about aged spirits, and by 1880 he had worked out the recipe the family still uses.

For more than half a century the Three Stars rum was the only one they made. Two Stars followed in 1933, and in recent years the family added Four Stars and Five Stars blends that draw on rums aged up to 20 and 35 years. The hacienda opened a visitor center in 2019.

How it's made

The family still follows Pedro Fernández's original 1880 formula and method. The rums rest in oak barrels on the estate, and the higher tiers use the same process while blending in much older reserves.

Why we carry them

We love Barrilito Three Stars as a sipping rum with real history behind it. It is a good bottle for anyone who thinks Puerto Rican rum is only for mixing.
