Their story

Rooted Fare is the work of Ashley Xie and Hedy Yu, two second-generation Chinese Americans who grew up eating well in Los Angeles. When they left for college and found few Chinese restaurants nearby, they missed the flavors of home and felt cut off from their heritage.

They started the company in 2021 to bring those flavors into everyday American pantries. After launching with three products, they narrowed their focus to one, a black sesame spread based on Ashley's grandmother's recipe for tang yuan, the sweet rice balls filled with black sesame paste.

How it's made

The Black Sesame Crunchy Butter is built around roasted sesame seeds, lightly sweetened and kept crunchy. Steady sesame supply mattered so much early on that the founders now keep backup suppliers lined up.

Why we carry them

We love this nutty, gently sweet spread on toast, on fruit, or spooned over ice cream. It is a fresh take on a classic Chinese dessert flavor.
