Their story
Sartarelli is a family winery in Poggio San Marcello, in the province of Ancona, in the heart of the Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi zone. The Sartarelli family grows one grape only, Verdicchio, and even founded a small museum on the estate dedicated to it.
Their Balciana, first made in 1994, is often credited with showing how serious and age-worthy Verdicchio could be.
How it's made
Every vine on the estate is Verdicchio, made into five wines ranging from a sparkling Charmat-method bottling to Tralivio, Balciana, and a sweet passito. No wooden barrels are used; all the wines are made in neutral vessels to keep the fruit and minerality front and center.
Why we carry them
We think Sartarelli is a great way to discover Verdicchio. The classic bottling is crisp and easy with seafood, and Balciana is worth a splurge.
