Their story
Seed + Mill started with homesickness. Lisa Mendelson, who grew up in Israel, moved to New York and could not find halva or tahini that matched what she knew, so she started carrying them back from trips home. When she shared them with friends Monica Molenaar and Rachel Simons, the three decided to start a company.
Their shop in Chelsea Market sells only sesame products: freshly milled tahini, dozens of halva flavors, and sesame spice blends. The halva is certified kosher.
How it's made
The company uses white sesame seeds from Humera, Ethiopia, roasted at carefully controlled temperatures. Tahini is milled on site in New York using a traditional method. The halva is made by small producers in Israel to Seed + Mill's specs, using cauldrons and paddles, with sugar whipped into a foam and kneaded into the sesame paste by hand.
Why we carry them
We think this is some of the best tahini you can buy, nutty and pourable. The halva makes an easy gift for anyone with a sweet tooth.
