Their story
The Selbach family has been part of Mosel wine since around 1600. Early generations shipped wine down the river in their own boats, in barrels made by cooper Matthias Oster, an ancestor whose name lives on in the family estate, Selbach-Oster, in the village of Zeltingen.
Today Johannes Selbach runs the business with his wife Barbara and son Sebastian, following his late father, Hans. Alongside the estate wines, the family has long worked as a merchant house, buying fruit from smaller growers in the area.
How it's made
The estate farms about 24 hectares on steep, south-facing slopes of weathered Devonian slate, many of them planted on original rootstock in sites such as Zeltinger Sonnenuhr and Wehlener Sonnenuhr. Farming is organic and sustainable. Wines ferment with wild yeast in old oak fuders and stainless steel, without fining, and are allowed to finish at their own pace, so some years run drier and others fruitier.
Why we carry them
We think Selbach is one of the most reliable names in Mosel Riesling, from everyday bottles to single-vineyard wines. Great with spicy food.
