Their story
Shipyard's roots are in Kennebunk, Maine, where Kennebunkport Brewing Company began at Federal Jack's, one of the state's first brewpubs. Within two years demand outgrew the little pub brewery.
In 1994 Fred Forsley and Gordon Hurtubise, with brewer Alan Pugsley, opened a larger brewery on Portland's waterfront, on the site of an old foundry. Miller bought a half stake in 1995 but later sold it back, and Shipyard has since added the Sea Dog Brewing and Capt'n Eli's soda brands.
How it's made
Shipyard brews a range of English-leaning ales and seasonal beers. Its fall Pumpkinhead, first brewed in 1997, makes up a large share of yearly output, and the brewery also makes an American version of Old Thumper under license from England's Ringwood Brewery.
Why we carry them
We think of Shipyard as a New England classic. Grab a Pumpkinhead when fall rolls around.
