Their story
Bodegas Sierra Salinas was started in 2000 by a winemaking family from Yecla, the neighboring wine region, who saw promise in the high, rocky hills of Alicante. In 2013 the winery was sold to the MGWines Group, owned by the Miñano Gomez family.
Winemaker Jose Ramon Gago works with vines planted between 1968 and 1998 at roughly 650 to 680 meters. Mo is the winery's straightforward Monastrell, made to show what the grape does in this dry, windy corner of southeastern Spain.
How it's made
The bush-trained vines are farmed organically on shallow, chalky, stony soils with big swings between day and night temperatures. Mo is 100 percent Monastrell fermented with native yeasts, with malolactic fermentation in French oak barrels. The winery moves wine by gravity and keeps oak influence restrained.
Why we carry them
Mo is a good way to taste Monastrell without spending much. We like it with grilled meats, sausages, or a weeknight pizza.
