Their story
Song Cai Distillery (Song Cai) is based in Hanoi and works with H'Mong farmers in the highlands of Dien Bien province in northwest Vietnam, who grow the rice it distills.
Rather than copy Scotch or bourbon, Song Cai aims to create a distinctly Vietnamese style of whisky, drawing on the country's long tradition of rice wine and rice spirits.
How it's made
The Single Grain Whisky is made from glutinous purple rice inoculated with banh men, a traditional Vietnamese starter, and fermented in stages over about seven months. Part is distilled in a direct-fired copper pot still and part in a wooden alquitar still, then each is aged three to four years in American oak casks seasoned with Vietnamese rice wine and blended.
Why we carry them
Song Cai is one of the most original whiskies on our shelves. Try it neat if you are curious about spirits beyond the usual regions.
