Their story

Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery was founded by Tom Mellor and David Thompson in Hunmanby, a village near the coast between Bridlington and Filey. Tom's family has farmed the surrounding land since 1945, and that farm supplies the barley for the whisky.

The distillery began production in 2016. After the spirit had time to mature, it released its first core whisky, Filey Bay Flagship, in 2019, named for the bay just up the coast. It was among the first single malts made in Yorkshire.

How it's made

Barley grown on the Mellor family farm is milled, mashed and fermented at the nearby Wold Top brewery. The wash then comes to the distillery, which runs two copper pot stills and a four-plate column still. The spirit is matured and bottled on site.

Why we carry them

Few whisky makers grow their own barley a short drive from the stills. We think Filey Bay is a great introduction to English single malt.
