Their story
Stone Brewing was started by Greg Koch and Steve Wagner in San Marcos, California, in 1996. Ten years later it moved into a purpose-built brewery and beer garden in Escondido, in northern San Diego County.
The brewery made its name with bold, hoppy beers like Arrogant Bastard Ale and Stone IPA, which helped put San Diego on the craft beer map. It later opened a brewery in Richmond, Virginia, and briefly ran one in Berlin.
Japan's Sapporo bought Stone in 2022. In 2026 the brand moved again, to Duvel Moortgat USA, and is now managed alongside Firestone Walker in Paso Robles.
How it's made
Stone is known for big, resinous hop character, most famously in its West Coast-style IPAs. Its lineup ranges from the flagship Stone IPA to the stronger Ruination and the dark, aggressive Arrogant Bastard.
Why we carry them
Stone IPA is a classic for a reason and a good benchmark for anyone exploring West Coast IPAs. Pair it with something spicy.
