Their story
The Straus family has farmed on the shores of Tomales Bay in Marshall, in western Marin County, since Bill Straus started a dairy there in 1941. His wife Ellen, a farmer and environmentalist, joined him in 1950.
Their son Albert Straus founded Straus Family Creamery in 1994. That same year the dairy became the first certified organic dairy west of the Mississippi, and the creamery describes itself as the first 100% certified organic creamery in the country.
How it's made
The first products were organic cream-top milk in reusable glass bottles, along with butter. Yogurt is set in stainless steel vats, sour cream is made in small batches, and the ice cream uses organic egg yolks. A methane digester turns manure into power for the farm.
Why we carry them
Straus is our local dairy at its best, from a family that has farmed Marin for more than 80 years. The cream-top milk and butter are hard to beat.
