Their story
Supernatural is the work of Carmel Hagen, a lifelong baker who won a Pillsbury baking contest as a third grader. Frustrated by how many cheerful baking decorations relied on artificial dyes, she set out to make colorful sprinkles without them.
She bootstrapped the New York company for several years before raising seed funding in 2021. Supernatural now sells sprinkles, food colors and rainbow chips online and through natural grocers, and supplies bakeries such as Milk Bar.
How it's made
Hagen tested more than 100 natural color sources, including wine grapes and edible flowers, before settling on her formulas. The colors come from concentrated vegetables and spices that give strong hues without adding taste or smell, and the products are made without soy or palm oil.
