Their story
Tamdhu, Gaelic for little dark hill, sits in Knockando in the heart of Speyside. It was built in the late 1890s by a group of whisky blenders who wanted a malt of their own, and its first spirit was casked in 1897.
For most of its life Tamdhu supplied blends like The Famous Grouse and Cutty Sark. The distillery went silent twice, first from the late 1920s to 1947 and again when Edrington closed it in 2010. Ian Macleod Distillers bought it in 2011 and restarted production in 2013, putting the single malt front and center.
How it's made
Tamdhu runs three wash stills and three spirit stills. Its single malts are matured in sherry casks, with a 10-year-old at the core of the range and a cask-strength Batch Strength alongside it.
Why we carry them
We point sherry-cask fans toward Tamdhu for its dried fruit and spice. It is a lovely, approachable Speyside to sip after dinner.
