Their story

Tensei is the sake of Kumazawa Shuzo, a brewery in Kanagawa Prefecture founded in 1870. It sits in a quiet spot reached by a single-track railway line.

The brewery is led by president Mokichi Kumazawa, with Tetsuro Igarashi as master brewer, or toji. Together they have brought Tensei to drinkers well beyond the region.

How it's made

Kumazawa Shuzo brews several styles under the Tensei label, including junmai ginjo and a tokubetsu junmai made in the traditional yamahai method, which relies on natural lactic bacteria to start fermentation. Bottlings such as Song of the Sea are made to pair with food.

Why we carry them

We like Tensei for its clean, food-friendly sakes. Song of the Sea is a natural partner for sushi or a simple plate of oysters.
