Their story
Tenuta delle Terre Nere is the Etna estate of Marco de Grazia, an American wine importer who began buying vineyards on the Sicilian volcano in 2002. The 2004 vintage, the first made in the estate's own cellars, marked its real start, and de Grazia became one of the pioneers of the modern Etna scene.
In 2025 the Tuscan wine family Frescobaldi bought a minority stake in the estate. De Grazia continues to run it.
How it's made
Terre Nere farms organically on black volcanic ash and pumice, including parcels of pre-phylloxera vines in crus like Calderara, Guardiola and Feudo di Mezzo. Big swings between day and night temperatures push harvest into late October. The Nerello reds macerate for 10 to 15 days and age in oak, about a quarter of it new, before bottling roughly 18 months later.
It's a partnership: nothing is going to change
Why we carry them
We think Terre Nere is one of the best ways to taste what Etna can do. The reds have the lift of Pinot Noir with a smoky, volcanic edge.
