Their story
Thackrey & Co. was the winery of Sean Thackrey, who spent years as a San Francisco art dealer specializing in early photography before turning to wine. He bonded his small winery in the coastal town of Bolinas in 1981, and his first release was a Merlot and Cabernet blend called Aquila.
Sean became known for Orion, a Syrah that later came from the Rossi vineyard in St. Helena, and Pleiades, a nonvintage blend that changed from year to year. He never advertised, yet the roughly 4,000 cases he made each year were always in demand.
He was also a collector of old winemaking books and manuscripts, gathering a library that reached back to a sixth-century Greek papyrus. Sean Thackrey died in May 2022 at age 79.
How it's made
Sean bought fruit from vineyards he admired rather than farming his own. He often left picked grapes outside overnight or longer before fermentation, a practice he traced back to the Greek poet Hesiod. Pleiades in particular was a free-form blend of many varieties assembled by taste each year.
Why we carry them
Thackrey wines are a piece of Northern California winemaking history, made by someone who followed his own instincts. Any bottle is worth opening with friends who like a good story.
