Their story

The Dalmore stands on the shore of the Cromarty Firth in Alness, north of Inverness. Every bottle carries a twelve-point stag, an emblem tied to Clan Mackenzie, whose first chief is said to have saved King Alexander III from a charging stag in 1263.

Merchant Sir Alexander Matheson founded the distillery in 1839 and leased it out for decades. Brothers Andrew and Charles Mackenzie took over in 1867, bought it in 1891, and their family ran it for close to a century, later doubling the number of stills. Whyte & Mackay acquired The Dalmore in 1960.

Richard Paterson became master distiller in 1975 at age 26 and shaped the house style for decades. Gregg Glass took on the role of master whisky maker in 2021, with Paterson staying on as a mentor.

How it's made

The Dalmore leans on long, layered maturation. Through partnerships with European sherry, port and wine producers that date back to the Mackenzie era, the team sources seasoned casks to finish and mature its spirit, giving the whisky its rich, fruit-forward character.

Why we carry them

If you like a sherried, dessert-leaning single malt, The Dalmore is a classic place to start. It makes a memorable gift, too.
