Their story

Jura Distillery sits in Craighouse, the only village on the Isle of Jura, off Scotland's west coast. Around 1,000 people lived on the island in the early 1800s; fewer than 250 live there today.

The local laird, Archibald Campbell, founded the distillery in 1810, and it was formally licensed in 1831. Falling demand forced it to close in 1901. Around 1960, landowner Robin Fletcher and whisky entrepreneur Tony Riley-Smith hired architect William Delme-Evans to rebuild it, and the distillery reopened in 1963. Whyte & Mackay has owned Jura since 1994.

How it's made

Delme-Evans designed unusually tall copper pot stills, with their height partly set by what could be shipped to the island by boat. The tall necks give a lighter, fruitier spirit, which is the base of Jura's balanced house style.

Why we carry them

Jura is an easygoing island malt, fruity rather than smoky, so it is a good bridge for anyone curious about whisky from the Scottish isles.
