Their story
The Lost Abbey lives in San Marcos, in the hills of north San Diego County. It was started in May 2006 by brewer Tomme Arthur together with siblings Vince and Gina Marsaglia, the family behind the Pizza Port brewpubs, and it began as a separate label under their Port Brewing Company.
Before that, Arthur spent years brewing at Pizza Port, where he was turning out more than a hundred batches a year. Several beers he worked on there, including Red Barn Saison and Ten Commandments, went on to become part of the Lost Abbey lineup.
The brewery made its name with monastic-style ales and a serious barrel program. Beers like Duck Duck Gooze and Angel's Share Barleywine became benchmarks for American wild and barrel-aged beer, and Cable Car, a blended sour first made for San Francisco's Toronado bar, is still one of its most sought-after releases.
How it's made
The Lost Abbey brews Belgian-inspired ales and ages many of them in oak. The barrel program started with about 100 barrels, grew to around 1,000 at its peak, and today works from a smaller set of barrels plus several large oak foeders. Wild and sour beers are blended from young and older barrels before release.
Why we carry them
We think The Lost Abbey is one of the best ways into California's take on Belgian brewing. Pick up a saison for dinner or save a barrel-aged bottle for sharing.
