Their story

The Organic Coup grew out of years spent inside Costco. Erica Welton, who lives in Lafayette, was a food buyer there and brought in the store's first organic product, organic milk. She spent about a dozen years helping turn Costco into the country's largest seller of organic food, and she partnered with fellow former Costco executive Dennis Hoover to start something of their own.

The first restaurant opened in Pleasanton in November 2015 and was billed as the first USDA certified organic fast food restaurant in the country. It grew to several Northern California locations, including Oakland and Berkeley, and later opened in the Seattle area.

How it's made

The menu is deliberately short and centers on fried chicken served as a sandwich, wrap, or bowl with a few house sauces. The kitchen uses certified organic ingredients, including organic air-chilled chicken breast and organic coconut oil for frying.

Why we carry them

We like a local story that started with someone changing how a big retailer buys food. The Organic Coup shows that organic can work at fast food speed.
