Their story

Tobermory sits at the edge of the harbor town of the same name on the Isle of Mull, off Scotland's west coast. It is the only whisky distillery on the island, and one of the oldest in Scotland.

John Sinclair of Lochaline founded it in 1798 under the name Ledaig. Over two centuries it changed hands many times and went quiet more than once, including a long closure from the late 1970s until 1989.

Since 1991 it has belonged to Burn Stewart Distillers, which later became part of the South African group Distell, itself acquired by Heineken. Alongside its single malts, the distillery added a Hebridean gin in 2019.

How it's made

The distillery makes two styles of single malt: unpeated Tobermory and the heavily peated Ledaig. Water comes from a private loch above the town, and the spirit runs through a copper-domed mash tun, Oregon pine washbacks and copper pot stills. Much of the spirit is matured at the sister Deanston distillery on the mainland.

Why we carry them

We like that one small island distillery can give you two very different drams: bright, fruity Tobermory and the coastal smoke of Ledaig. Try them side by side.
