Utilitario Mexicano

A Mexico City shop celebrating useful, everyday Mexican-made objects.

Founded by
Enrique Arellano, Libia Moreno
Based in
Colonia Juárez, Mexico City

Their story

Utilitario Mexicano was started by Enrique Arellano, a graphic designer, and Libia Moreno, a textile designer, who moved to Mexico City from Colombia. It began as a pop-up offered to them in place of payment for a design job, and grew into a shop on the ground floor of an Art Deco building in Colonia Juárez.

Their motto is "útil solamente," or useful only. The couple see themselves as street curators, gathering the everyday objects they love, many of which they worry are disappearing, and giving them a second life.

How it's made

The founders source from Mexico City markets like La Merced and Jamaica and now work directly with local factories. Their enamelware is made by a Mexico City factory in custom colors, and other pieces come from small workshops and weavers around the country.

Why we carry them

We love Utilitario Mexicano for simple, sturdy pieces that get used every day. Their enamel coasters and mugs make easy, thoughtful gifts.
