Their story
Vins El Cep was founded in 1980 by four winegrowing families in Espiells, a corner of Sant Sadurní d'Anoia in the Penedès, the home of Spanish sparkling wine. The winery sits on the Can Llopart de les Alzines estate, and today a second generation, including partner and manager Maite Esteve, carries it on.
The group farms four family estates and was the first in its area to work biodynamically, releasing Claror, which it calls the world's first biodynamic cava. Most of what they make, about 85 percent, is sold abroad.
How it's made
The four estates have been farmed organically for years, with Xarel-lo as the main grape alongside Macabeo, Parellada and some Pinot Noir. The winery generates its own solar power, and its sparkling wines are made in the traditional method with a second fermentation in the bottle.
The territory defines the product, and it is necessary to look after it, protect it and actively defend it
Why we carry them
We like El Cep for organic, grower-made bubbles that taste of Xarel-lo and place. It is a smart pick when you want quality sparkling wine without Champagne prices.
