Their story
Virginia Distillery Co. is the dream of Dr. George G. Moore, an Irishman who came to the United States in the 1970s and founded the company in 2011 in Lovingston, about an hour west of Charlottesville. He died in 2013, before the first whisky came of age, and his family carried the project forward.
His son Gareth Moore leads the company as CEO, with his mother Angela as chair and his wife Maggie overseeing the visitor experience. Their flagship line, Courage & Conviction, takes its name from George's favorite advice, and in 2023 it helped the distillery win Distillery of the Year at the London Spirits Competition.
How it's made
The distillery makes American single malt whisky in Lovingston, where the local climate suits barrel aging. Once the stills were running, the team waited several years for the first whisky to mature before releasing it.
Why we carry them
We think Courage & Conviction is a great bottle for anyone curious about American single malt. It shows how far this young category has come.
