Their story
Volcan de mi Tierra takes its name from the Tequila Volcano in Jalisco, which rises above the lowland agave fields where the brand's distillery sits near El Arenal. The brand is a partnership between Mexico's Gallardo family, including Don Juan Gallardo, and Moët Hennessy.
The tequila was developed over about two and a half years with Maestra Tequilera Ana María Romero Mena and launched in 2017. Her approach centers on terroir, blending agave from the highlands and lowlands of the same region to build a fuller flavor.
How it's made
The Blanco blends lowland agave, slow-cooked for about two days in a traditional masonry oven and crushed by stone wheel, with highland agave cooked for a shorter time. Fermentation is slow, the spirit is distilled in copper and then steel, and it rests before bottling. The Cristalino is a blend of añejo and extra añejo tequilas aged in used whisky and cognac casks, then filtered clear.
There's only one type of agave used in tequila, but we can work with the terroir.
Why we carry them
We reach for the Blanco when we want to taste the difference between highland and lowland agave in one glass. It is bright enough for a Paloma and calm enough to sip neat.
