Their story
Weingut von Winning sits in Deidesheim, a small wine town in Germany's Pfalz. The estate was founded in 1849 by Friedrich Deinhard, of the well-known Deinhard wine family, and his wife Auguste Jordan.
Its name comes from Leopold von Winning, a son-in-law of the family who ran the estate from the 1870s into the 1910s and pushed it to make wines worthy of its best sites. For decades it traded as Dr. Deinhard. In 2007 entrepreneur Achim Niederberger acquired the estate and brought back the von Winning name, and today it is widely known for dry Riesling.
How it's made
The focus is on Riesling from Deidesheim and neighboring villages, with single-vineyard wines from classified sites such as Paradiesgarten. The wines are made to reflect each parcel, with village and estate bottlings alongside the top Erste and Grosse Lage wines.
Why we carry them
We like von Winning as a way into dry German Riesling. The wines are textured and food friendly, and a good reminder that the Pfalz can rival any region for the grape.
