Their story

Westmalle Brewery sits inside Westmalle Abbey, a Trappist monastery in the Belgian village of Westmalle. The abbey was founded in 1794, and the monks brewed their first beer on August 1, 1836, the same year the community was raised to Trappist rank.

The Tripel was first brewed in 1934 and remains the brewery's best-known beer. Today a small community of monks works alongside lay staff to run the brewery, and the abbey also produces milk and cheese.

How it's made

The brewery keeps a short lineup: the 7 percent Dubbel, the 9.5 percent Tripel, and the lighter 5 percent Extra, the everyday beer the monks drink themselves. Brewing happens inside the abbey walls with monks and lay staff working together, as Trappist rules require.

Why we carry them

Westmalle Tripel is a benchmark beer we come back to again and again. It is a lesson in how much flavor can come from a few simple ingredients.
