Their story
William Hinton rum comes from the Portuguese island of Madeira, out in the Atlantic. In 1845 a man named William Hinton set up a sugar mill and rum distillery there.
Generations later, one of Hinton's heirs founded Engenho Novo da Madeira, restored the family's original alembic still, and brought the Hinton name back to rum. The range runs from unaged white rums to bottles aged for several years in casks.
How it's made
The rum is made from fresh-pressed sugarcane juice rather than molasses, in the agricultural style. It is distilled only once, which keeps more of the cane's grassy, fresh character. Aged expressions spend years in wood before bottling.
Why we carry them
We like rum that tastes of the cane it came from, and this has that bright, grassy edge. It is a fun way to explore an island better known for its wine.
