Their story
Yellow Rose Distilling was founded in 2010 by Ryan Baird and Troy Smith, with Rice University business school classmate Randy Whitaker joining as a partner. Classmates helped fund the venture, and professors stopped by the distillery to offer advice.
The company became the first legal whiskey distillery in Houston and opened a 10,000-square-foot production facility in 2014. Its lineup includes Outlaw Bourbon, a rye and a blended whiskey that became its best seller.
How it's made
Outlaw Bourbon is made from 100 percent corn and moved through progressively larger small casks as it ages. The rye is aged in custom barrels with extra staves and blended from younger and older spirit to balance its spice.
They weren't so much invested in the idea as they were invested in us.
Why we carry them
We like Yellow Rose as a taste of the Texas whiskey scene, and the all-corn Outlaw Bourbon is a distinctive pour.
