Their story
Young & Yonder is the work of Sarah and Josh Opatz, a husband-and-wife team who started distilling in Cloverdale in 2013. Josh's step-brother, Shane Harlan, later joined as a partner, keeping the business firmly in the family.
The distillery has since moved to Healdsburg, where a small space on Allan Court, a short walk from the Plaza, holds both the stills and a tasting room. Visitors can sit down to a flight or a seasonal cocktail and then look around the room where the spirits are actually made.
The lineup has grown to include Armont Vodka, H.O.B.S. Gin, Fellows and Foragers Absinthe, an amaro and a small set of whiskeys.
How it's made
The Opatzes have worked with organic ingredients from the start, and the distillery later earned USDA organic certification, which meant rebuilding its supply chain and passing yearly audits. Everything except the whiskeys is certified organic. For the whiskeys they chose non-GMO grain from local growers because they could not find local organic grain that met their standard.
Why we carry them
We like how close to home this one is: a family distillery an hour north of the city, making clean, organic spirits by hand. The gin is a good place to start.
