Yuu Baal
A Oaxacan mezcal group bottling the work of local family producers.

- Oaxaca de Juárez, Oaxaca

Their story
Yuu Baal is based in Oaxaca and describes itself as a social enterprise built to support the traditions of the state's mezcal makers. Rather than running one distillery, it gathers batches from mezcaleros in communities such as San Juan del Río, San Luis del Río, Tlacolula and Miahuatlán.
The range covers young mezcals from espadín, madrecuixe, tobalá and tepeztate, along with aged expressions and a pechuga.
How it's made
Agaves are roasted in underground ovens, milled by traditional methods including the tahona, fermented in wooden vats and usually distilled twice. The pechuga gets a final pass with fruit, spices and meat, and the reposado rests in American oak.
Why we carry them
We like Yuu Baal as a way into mezcal that still respects the people making it. The espadín is an easy, honest place to begin.
