Their story

Ardbeg stands on the south coast of Islay in Scotland's Inner Hebrides, a short walk from the sea. Whisky was being made on the site before 1800, and commercial distilling began in 1815.

The distillery has had a rocky history. Hiram Walker took control in 1979, production stopped in 1981, and for years it ran only in short spells. Glenmorangie bought and reopened Ardbeg in 1997, returning it to full production the next year.

In 2004 the luxury group LVMH acquired Glenmorangie, and Ardbeg has been part of that group ever since.

How it's made

Ardbeg is distilled from heavily peated malted barley from the maltings at Port Ellen. Water comes from Loch Uigeadail, a few kilometers north of the distillery, and the spirit runs through a pair of copper pot stills before maturing in oak.

Why we carry them

For anyone who loves smoke, Ardbeg is a benchmark. We point peat fans here when they want something bold that still has plenty of sweetness under the fire.
