- San Miguel Ejutla, Oaxaca
Their story
Banhez is a cooperative brand, owned by the more than 36 family producers who make it in the Ejutla and Miahuatlán areas of Oaxaca. It is linked to a local farmers' union in the Ejutla de Crespo district.
Francisco Javier Pérez Cruz brought the group together and also founded a council to help Oaxacan maguey and mezcal producers organize. His son, Luis, now runs the cooperative.
How it's made
Each family makes mezcal using the traditions of its own community, with a focus on craft quality. Support for agave nurseries and the reopening of village distilleries around Ejutla has helped keep production local and in the hands of the producers.

We like Banhez because the people making the mezcal own the brand. It is an approachable bottle for anyone new to mezcal.
