Their story
Better Than Bouillon got its start with Superior Quality Foods, a maker of food bases, gravy mixes and seasoning blends in Ontario, California, run by owner Jim Wallace.
In 2009, Southeastern Mills of Rome, Georgia, bought Superior Quality Foods and brought the brand into its family. Southeastern Mills itself began in 1941 as a family-owned bakery and renamed itself Summit Hill Foods in 2020.
In 2023, the New York private equity firm EagleTree Capital acquired Summit Hill Foods, which continues to make Better Than Bouillon from its home base in Rome.
How it's made
Instead of dry cubes or powder, the bases are cooked-down pastes made from roasted meats, seafood or vegetables. A spoonful dissolved in hot water makes stock, or it can go straight into a pan sauce, gravy or soup.
