Their story

Mark and Megan Overbay met in 2010 and launched Big Spoon Roasters a year later at the Carrboro Farmers Market. Mark had learned to roast peanuts into paste while serving in the Peace Corps in Zimbabwe, and Megan, an endurance athlete, worked out recipes for nut butter energy bars.

The company began in a rented kitchen in downtown Durham and now works from its own facility in Hillsborough. The name comes from a nickname for Mark's father, a nod to how he eats peanut butter. The couple has grown without outside investors and joined the B Corp community in 2026.

How it's made

Nuts are roasted in small batches and ground with simple add-ins like honey, sea salt and coconut oil. The founders buy from farmers and producers who share their values. Beyond nut butters, they make energy bars and a peanut butter line for dogs.

Why we carry them

We think these jars show how good nut butter can be when it is made in small batches. Try the Pistachio Crunch on toast or with apples.
