Their story
Bob and Charlee Moore started Bob's Red Mill in 1978 after buying an old commercial flour mill in Oregon City and painting it red. They had already run a small mill in Redding, California, which they handed to their sons. The company is now based in Milwaukie, Oregon.
Bob Moore was known for treating his staff as partners. He started profit sharing in the 1980s, began transferring ownership to employees in 2010, and by 2020 the company was fully employee-owned. Charlee died in 2018, and Bob died in 2024 at 94.
How it's made
The mill grinds whole grains between quartz millstones, which run cooler than steel and keep the bran, germ and endosperm together. Bob's Red Mill was also an early mover in gluten-free products, which it began making in the 1990s, and it runs its own labs to test for gluten-free and organic compliance.
