Their story

BHAKTA Spirits is the project of Raj Bhakta, who earlier founded WhistlePig rye whiskey and sold his stake in 2017. The idea took shape during a 2018 sabbatical in France, where he fell for Armagnac.

Bhakta bought an Armagnac estate in Gascony along with a family collection of vintages reaching back to 1868. In 2020 he bought the former Green Mountain College campus in Poultney, Vermont, which now serves as the company's home.

The range has since grown past Armagnac into vintage bourbon and rye, with more spirits in the works.

How it's made

BHAKTA treats spirits the way wine is treated, releasing them by vintage year. Barrels are shipped from France and aged in the old campus library in Vermont. The flagship BHAKTA 50 blends Armagnacs from vintages spanning 1868 to 1970, finished in Islay whisky casks, and its bourbon is finished in barrels that once held Armagnac.

Why we carry them

We like BHAKTA as a way in to Armagnac for whiskey drinkers. Pouring a dated vintage side by side with a bourbon is a fun tasting lesson.
