Their story
José Pantaleón Hidalgo founded this sherry house in Sanlúcar de Barrameda in 1792, and it has stayed in the family ever since. The Hidalgos are now in their eighth generation of running the bodega.
Their best-known wine, La Gitana, dates to around 1890 and is named for a Romani woman who sold the family's wine in Málaga. It is now the house's flagship and makes up most of what the bodega produces.
How it's made
The family owns about 170 hectares of Palomino Fino in the Balbaina and Miraflores vineyards, planted on chalky white albariza soil. The wine ages under flor in a solera of roughly 4,000 casks in the San Luis bodega, which sits slightly below sea level and stays cool and humid.
Why we carry them
We think La Gitana is a benchmark manzanilla and a great value. Serve it cold with salted almonds, jamón or a plate of fried fish.
