Their story
Juan Antonio Ponce comes from a grape-growing family in Iniesta, a town in Cuenca province in the Manchuela region of central Spain. His father sold grapes to the local cooperative, but never made wine himself.
After studying in Requena and working with Telmo Rodríguez in Rioja, Toro and Gredos, Ponce chose to come home. At 23 he convinced his father to start a small company, and their first vintage, 2005, was made in just 11 barrels. He has since become one of the leading voices for the Bobal grape.
How it's made
The family owns 17 hectares and farms up to 40, much of it old vines kept on long leases so they will not be pulled up. Vineyards are farmed organically, and each small plot is handled separately. Ponce picks earlier than his neighbors and ages in large 600-liter casks to soften Bobal's firm tannins.

Why we carry them
We think Ponce shows Bobal at its best, fresh and lively instead of heavy. These are reds to open on a weeknight and still talk about.
