Their story

Chandon was the first French sparkling wine house to set up in California. Moët Hennessy, looking to grow in the state, hired John Wright after he wrote a study on California wine, and he helped launch the Napa operation and ran it for more than two decades.

The first vintages, starting in 1973, were made at the Trefethen winery before Chandon moved into its own home in Yountville in 1977. Wright oversaw the winery's design and pushed for a restaurant pairing sparkling wine with French food, which helped make the estate one of the valley's most visited stops.

Moët & Chandon provided technical guidance from the start, and the brand remains part of the Moët Hennessy family.

How it's made

Chandon was the first French sparkling wine house in California and built its reputation on the traditional method, the approach used in Champagne, where the second fermentation that creates the bubbles happens in the bottle. Winemaking drew on technical guidance from Moët & Chandon from the start.

Why we carry them

We like Chandon as a dependable California sparkler for toasts, brunches and weeknight celebrations alike. It shows what the Champagne method can do with Napa fruit.
