Their story
Dona is a Brooklyn tea company started by Amy Rothstein. While studying food at NYU, she noticed that many of New York's coffee shops poured chai from a box, often heavy on sugar and light on actual spice, and she saw room for something better.
She had never made chai before, so she learned its history and traditions as she went, testing recipes from her Brooklyn kitchen. Dona launched in March 2014 and grew quickly, supplying coffee shops and home drinkers around the country from its own Brooklyn warehouse.
How it's made
Dona's masala chai is built on fresh ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, cloves and black pepper. The spices are steeped with black tea and sweetened lightly so the spice leads. The team brews in its Brooklyn warehouse.
I did it backwards. I had never made chai before.
Why we carry them
We like Dona for a chai latte that tastes like ginger and spice, not syrup. Mix it with warm milk for an easy cup at home.
